UMCPS Meeting 5/16 @ 3:00pm

Outdoor Bog Gardening!

Yes, the meeting is tomorrow. We had a lot of fun scheduling this, as the hoped for speaker had a conflict come up at the last minute.

Jumi has just put together an outdoor bog garden and will be leading a discussion about them. Since she has just put this together, it will be more of a round table. Anyone with expertise is more than welcome to weigh in and discuss what works, and what does not.

The meeting will be tomorrow Sunday 5/16 via Zoom. The usual time of 3:00 pm. Contact us for the meeting link.
Looks like the CDC is relaxing the rules, so we may be able to meet in person again! Much of that is going to depend on the venue.

UMCPS Meeting 3/14 @ 3:00pm

Plant and Seed Sources.

Usually we do our seed starting meeting this time of year. Sadly with the pandemic, that is not going to happen. So we are going to have a meeting about where to source seeds and plant.
The meeting will start with me (Bill) bringing up the usual suspects.
Being more of a round table, bring your sources. Places you would never deal with again.

We will also be discussing group orders from overseas again. All the vendors we have ordered from previously. How many plants we can order, now that vehicle costs have plummeted!

The meeting will be Sunday 3/14 via Zoom. The usual time of 3:00 pm. Contact us for the meeting link.

UMCPS Meeting – Planning 1/10

Well, it is that time again. We need to have a planning meeting and elect a president.

Given the state of the world, anyone have ideas for online meetings? Things we can do without the in-person thing?
Hopes and dreams for when the vaccines are rolled out and it is safe to leave the house again?

Come share your ideas. Given that this is an election, I would really appreciate people showing up.

The meeting will be Sunday 1/10 via Zoom. The usual time of 3:00 pm. Contact us for the meeting link.

UMCPS Nov 15th Zoom meeting!

First off an interesting article about research out of Japan on how
Venus Fly Traps count. This was posted on facebook, so will not be new
for some of you.
https://arstechnica.com/science/2020/10/the-secret-of-how-the-venus-flytrap-remembers-when-it-captures-prey/

If you think that date is a week late, you are correct. We needed to move the meeting to accommodate our speaker.
For the first time ever, to the best of my knowledge, we are going to
have an speaker that is not a member!
Dr. David Remucal, Curator of Endangered Plants at the U of M’s
Landscape Arboretum, will be talking conservation.
“Plant Conservation at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum: Projects and
Priorities”

The meeting will be Sunday 11/15 via Zoom. The usual time of 3:00 pm. Contact us for the meeting link.

UMCPS – May Seed Starting meeting is canceled

The meeting was supposed to take place on May 17th, a week later to avoid Mother’s Day as we always do. The state is still under a stay at home order until the 18th.
Since there is no way to have a seed starting meeting online, and we meet at a government building, the meeting is hereby canceled.

With luck, and a lack of resurgence of COVID-19 after the state reopens, we will have a gathering in June.

Hope everyone’s plants are growing well with all the extra attention!
Bill – UMCPS President

UMCPS April Social Canceled

Well, it is time for the April social meeting, and of course, we are socially locked down. In place of our meeting this month, time will need to be spent with family and plants, but it need not to be in that order.

By now, if all went well, the flytraps and sarrs are out of dormancy and likely either stalks are up or they are in flower. I have done most of my spring repotting, I have a few sarrs left to separate the seedlings from last year into larger pots for the year. The flytraps are in the process of setting flower stalks and I am in the process of removing the stalks, trimming to size and placing into sphagnum moss in hopes of having some babies grow from the stalks.

Hopefully in a few weeks, some of the CPs and orchids will go to the greenhouse. The way my plant accumulation is going, I may need to add a room onto my house in a couple years. Oh the joys of a growing hobby.

See you next month…hopefully.
